Clean a room or closet

Well, if you are reading this, you have something in your home that needs to be organized. Well, who doesn’t? You can hire a professional organizer (boy have I thought of going into that business, talk about FUN (I mean it!)). Or do it yourself. In this economy, most folks will choose to do it themselves.

So, you have a room or a closet that needs major cleaning? The first thing you need to do is evaluate what is in the space and where the items will go. Also, what do you want the closet or room to look like when you are done? So, a plan of attack is necessary.

Secondly, purchase whatever you need to complete the task–and complete the task in one session.

Attack! Once you begin to clean out that closet or room, make piles (label with an index card) for:

  • store
  • donate
  • garage sale pile
  • garbage
  • move to another space in the house

Don’t leave the space until you are done. Make sure you have garbage bags, sharpies, rubbermade containers, everything you’ll need to complete the task. Don’t forget water and some snacks and the cordless phone. Don’t give yourself an excuse to leave the space.

Group similar items together for storing or moving to another space in your home.

Garbage – if you haven’t worn it or used it in five years, toss it! How about one or two years? Will you ever use it? Will you remember you have the item when you need it?

Does this sound impossible? Find a friend that will help – even if it is mostly emotional help. A cheerleader. A storyteller. A gofer. It’ll be more fun that way.

  1. I had my sister help me when I did this in our storage area quite a few years ago. Talk about helping. I kept hearing comments like this, “How long’s it been since you used THAT?” LOL What’s a little sister for anyway, but to pester her older sister.

  2. Suzanne,
Thanks for the comment. It is true, we*need* to part with those items we haven’t touched in a while…or EVER!
My husband got me a labeler for Christmas and it was awesome when we reorganized a large closet yesterday….it looks so orderly and professional now! Heidi
