Job says “. . . naked I will depart”

I was reading Job 1 the other day. Pondering his thought in Job 1:21a : we leave this earth naked, like we came into the world. And that his thought was directly after losing his herds, servants and all his children! He then praised God (Job 1:21b)!!!

Society has taught us to want more. Therefore, as a whole, we are not thankful for what we have but ungrateful for what we don’t have (money, people we’ve lost, children we haven’t born, health and so on). Yet Job had much in his day. He was considered wealthy. But his attitude was not “give me more” it was “thank you for what I do have, for as long as you allow me to tend to it”. That’s an attitude I know I don’t fully have, but one I’d like God to help me achieve. How about you?

The other thought I had was that God offered Job to Satan (Job 1:8) “Have you considered my servant . . . ” Yikes! Here Job served God fully. Was blameless in God’s sight. Yet God offered Job to Satan! Why? Well, I don’t know for sure, but I do know that God is to be glorified (see Isa 60:21 for starters). And as you read the culmination of the book of Job, you see that God was truly glorified through Job’s trials.

Are you ready for trials in your life? Being in the Word daily surely helps.

  1. Thanks for reading and commenting Patricia. Jobs words are so true. We have all gotten caught up in “things”. I think that’s what struck me about this passage.
Yes, words to cling to in the days ahead. Heidi

  2. It amazes me that God knows every detail about our lives. Even the trials that come into our lives are approved of by God. There is great comfort in knowing that He is overseeing the good and what we consider the ‘bad’. This verse came to mind…

1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
